SUMMARY:Seniors for Climate presents a "must-see" webinar on Sept 9th\, with John Vaillant\, award-winning author of Fire Weather
DESCRIPTION:All CALL supporters are invited to join in a special webinar event presented by Seniors for Climate\, on September 9 at 6:30 PM ET\, with John Vaillant\, award-winning author of Fire Weather. In a 30-minute talk and live Q&A\, Vaillant will explore how wildfires—fuelled by fossil-driven climate change—are reshaping our lives and what we can do about it. \nREGISTER HERE:    \nCanada is facing its second-worst wildfire season ever—over 7 million hectares burned\, coast-to-coast blazes\, mass evacuations\, and dangerously poor air quality for vulnerable groups\, especially seniors. \nWhy it matters: Seniors are among the hardest hit—facing respiratory distress\, displacement\, and isolation from wildfire smoke.\nWhat you’ll gain: Urgency\, insight\, and a path forward.

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE VIDEO AND ACCESS OTHER LEARNING RESOURCES. \nMaking environmental claims without being able to back them up or “greenwashing” is more prevalent than we think. On November 27\, we are excited to welcome a panel of three experts to discuss greenwashing: what it is; how it has changed; the challenge of AI; why it is a significant problem; some of the consequences; how/why other countries are moving on this; all in the context of why this is a problem for Canada. Our panelists will also discuss Bill C59 (to amend the Canada Competition Act) and private member’s Bill C-372 (an Act to ban fossil fuel advertising). We hope you can join us! \nPANELISTS\n\nChris Russill is an Associate Professor in Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication and Academic Director at Re.Climate a centre for climate communication and public engagement.\nLeah Temper is the Director of Health and Economic Policy at the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE). She is an ecological economist and leader in environmental justice. She is co-founder of the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice and one of the world’s top 2% most cited scientists (2024).\nIris Fairley-Beam is an independent researcher based in Vancouver who works to reform the law to prevent greenwashing. SUMMARY:Powering Ontario's Future: Is Ontario's energy plan designed for the 21st century?
DESCRIPTION:UNFORTUNATELY\, THIS MONTHLY MEETING HAD TO BE POSTPONED DUE TO SPEAKER ILLNESS. WE WILL BE ADDRESSING THIS SUBJECT ON AN ONGOING BASIS. \nMark this date for CALL’s October learning meeting/webinar when we will do a “deep dive” on the subject of creating a clean power grid for Ontario. We will examine the assumptions and conclusions of the recent IESO Pathways to Decarbonization study\, a critique of the PC’s Powering Ontario’s Future plan\, and take a look at the just-released draft of Clean Energy Regulations. This session is especially for our members and guests and will be led by meeting producer Liz Addison along with  a group of dedicated volunteers from CALL’s Climate Advocacy Interest Group.

SUMMARY:Winemakers taking on Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. A video and other learning resources are available here. \nIt’s not an exaggeration to say climate change has altered the wine industry forever. From grape-growing to winemaking\, it has spawned an encouraging and sometime bewildering array of farming practices – forcing producers to adopt more sustainable methods of production… RAW\, natural\, organic\, biodynamic\, regenerative\, low-intervention\, permaculture\, polyculture and more. \nDebbie Gordon (CALL supporter and certified Sommelier and Canadian wine scholar) interviewed Steve Matthiasson of Matthiasson Wines in Napa Valley. Steve and his wife Jill are committed environmentalists and certified organic farmers who evaluate every agricultural decision through the lens of sustainability.  Debbie also interviewed Andrea Kaiser (Chair of Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario) to get an update on Ontario’s Wine Sustainability Certification and how the province’s winegrowers are adopting resilience strategies.

SUMMARY:Biodiversity for Life and Climate
DESCRIPTION:Image: Butterfly Photo:  Atanu Bose Photography\, CC BY-SA 4.0 \, via Wikimedia Commons \nTHIS EVENT IS HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. \nOur meeting topic was “Biodiversity for Life and Climate” and included a recap of COP15\, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity held in Montreal in December. Our guest speakers were Dr. Justina Ray (President and Senior Scientist at Wildlife Conservation Society Canada) and Mitchell Beer (publisher and managing editor of The Energy Mix / Climate News Network). \nFOR RESOURCES PAGE [CREATE NEW] \nDear Karen\, \nLast Wednesday\, at our CALL monthly learning meeting titled\, Biodiversity for Life and Climate\, we learned that Biodiversity encompasses the variety of living species on Earth\, including plants\, animals\, bacteria\, and fungi. While Earth’s biodiversity is so rich that many species have yet to be discovered\, many species are being threatened with extinction due to human activities\, putting the Earth’s magnificent biodiversity at risk and therefore human life as well. \nWe were pleased to introduce Dr. Justina Ray\, President and Senior Scientist of Wildlife Conservation Society Canada; and Mitchell Beer\, the founding publisher of Energy Mix\, an e-digest on climate news. \nOur speakers provided an overview of biodiversity in Canada\, some understanding of biodiversity and climate change\, the twin crises that humanity is facing as well as a brief summary of the climate conference COP 27 and the Nature COP 15 held in Dec in Montreal. \nFor those who attended we hope you enjoyed the presentation. For those who were not able to attend the presentation\, here is a link to a video recording of the event: \nAnd here is a link to a folder with copies of the speakers’ slides and a document with follow-up resources including answers to questions that we did not have time to get answered during the session which our speakers kindly answered afterwards. \nOur Action of the Day\, was about the momentum growing to protect the Greenbelt from irreversible harm to wildlife\, ecological systems and prime agricultural areas from the Ford government’s decision to open up areas for development. To learn more and to take action\, visit the Greenbelt Promise website. \nPlease join us next month (it’s SOON – Wednesday\, February 1st at 10:00 a.m.) for our Annual CALL Townhall Meeting. It’s a chance to review the past year and look forward with upcoming plans. Plus a great opportunity for you to hear about some interesting volunteer opportunities with CALL. Register by clicking here: \nYou can also encourage your friends and family members to join CALL as a “Supporter” and attend any of our monthly learning meetings or interest groups. All our activities are no charge. You can pass along this sign-up link here. \nHope you’ll join us again\, \nJoAnne Hunter On behalf of the CALL Leadership team \n___________________________________________________________________________________ \n
