SUMMARY:RALLY TO SUPPORT THE NEW ONTARIO CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION & RESILIENCE ACT AT QUEEN'S PARK\, @9:30 a.m. on Thursday\, May 16th\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. On Thursday May 16th at 9:30 a.m. at the Ontario Legislature\, MPP Peter Tabuns tabled a Private Member’s Bill\, the Ontario Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Act. The Act was written with the help of Seniors for Climate Action Now! and Climate Action for Lifelong Learners member Jennifer Penney. The current government has no legislation in place to protect Ontarians from the impacts of climate change. If the government were to pass this Act\, it would acknowledge the impacts of climate change and reduce the harms of more frequent and intense extreme heat\, storms\, flooding and wildfires.\n\nThis rally was held near the front steps of the Ontario Legislature at Queen’s Park from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday\, May 16th\, 2024\, to support the introduction of the Act\, and to call on the government to adopt it.

SUMMARY:Climate Change Adaptation: Why do we need it and what are we doing?
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. YOU CAN VIEW THE PRESENTATION & FIND FURTHER RESOURCES HERE. \nOn May 1st\, 2024\, CALL member Dr. Jennifer Penney presented on the topic: Climate Change Adaptation: Why do we need it and what are we doing?  \nActivists rightly prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change. However successful we are in reducing emissions\, climate change is already endangering us and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We need to understand these dangers and advocate for action that makes our communities less vulnerable. \n \nDr. Jennifer Penney shared with us ways to make our communities more adaptive and resilient and what the federal and provincial governments are doing (or not doing) to get us there. \n

DESCRIPTION:THIS MEETING HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. \nJoin our Climate Advocacy Interest Group meeting this Wednesday\, April 17th at 10:00 a.m. ET. \nHope to see you then! \nMichael Barkley and Karen Sadlier-Brown – Co-Leads\, CALL’s Climate Advocacy Interest Group \n  \nBACKGROUND NOTES FOR THIS ADVOCACY MEETING: \nTHE CARBON TAX \nYou have probably heard more than enough from “axe the tax” proponents – but given what a hot topic it is\, we thought it is important to hear your views at our meeting on the 17th. \nTo start the discussion Karen is going to provide a brief overview focussing on: \n\nWhat is the consumer carbon tax or rather the carbon levy (as supporters call it)?\nHow much does it cost your pocket book?\nAre there alternative ways to achieve the same outcome?\n\nBefore the meeting on the 17th\, you may want to read this summary from the David Suzuki Foundation: Carbon Pricing 101 \nFor a lively discussion on alternatives to the carbon tax\, here is a link to a podcast supported by the University of Calgary and other foundations. Energy vs Climate’s hosts interview Dr. Mark Jaccard: Hot Topic: Carbon Tax. Dr. Jaccard spoke at one of our early Learning Meetings a few years ago. \nCLIMATE MESSAGING/COMMUNICATION WORKING GROUP \nThere is a lot of very interesting work happening on how to best communicate climate issues and motivate people to support action. In this context\, we note that our Climate Messaging Work Group will be getting together shortly to look at Re.Climate’s latest findings. Re.Climate is located at Carleton University. \nHere are links to Re.Climate’s recent webinar\, the slides and the report: \nWatch the webinar with Chris Hatch from the National Observer and others here. \nRead the Report\, What do Canadians Really Think About Climate Change? A summary of Public Opinion Research for Communicators 2024. \nONTARIO ENERGY TRANSITION WORKING GROUP \nThe Ontario Energy Transition Group looks at the status of Ontario’s energy transition. As with the Messaging group\, we hope to get a zoom meeting together soon. This group is helping to produce a Learning Meeting in the Fall. Here are some links to recent podcasts from Energi Talks that cover the transition and some of the key issues: \nHuge electricity demand growth threatens US power grid \nBig savings for California grid from virtual power plants \n

SUMMARY:CALL-Climate Advocacy Interest Group-Monthly Meeting-Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024 @ 10:00 a.m. ET on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:THIS MEETING HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. \nJoin us on March 20\, at 10:00am ET for our monthly Climate Advocacy Interest Group meeting. \nWe’ve prepared some information and some podcasts to listen to\, so we can consider some questions for discussion at the meeting.  It will continue on our theme of better understanding the energy landscape in Ontario. \nMany of you may know that the government is committed to a nuclear path for Ontario as the ongoing base load of our electricity supply. There is significant opposition to this strategy and Professor Winfield from York University has much to say on the topic. See this PDF document for more information and links to the podcasts and other background material. \nKaren Sadlier-Brown will start the meeting by giving us a short introduction and overview of the energy situation in Ontario followed by a discussion of the podcasts we have sent you\, and then a chat about your suggestions for the format of a CALL Learning Meeting on this topic put on by our advocacy group in September\, 2024.  \nWe look very much forward to seeing you on March 20th.  \nAll the best\, \nMichael & Karen \nMichael Barkley & Karen Sadlier-Brown for CALL’s Climate Advocacy Interest Group

SUMMARY:Join CALL for a Book Discussion on Wednesday\, November 22nd at 4 p.m. ET on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:As a follow-up to our September 6th learning meeting on disinformation\, join us for a book discussion on Dr. Michael E. Mann’s book\, “The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet”. \nIn this book\, Dr. E. Mann argues that the old climate war of assault on the basic science of climate change by fossil fuel interests has been replaced by a new climate war. The opponents of climate action now have different tactics: \n\nGetting climate advocates fighting with each other so that we don’t have present a unified voice demanding change;\nDeflecting attention away from the needed systemic or policy solutions to to focus instead on individual behaviour.\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. You will receive an email confirmation with your personal Zoom link to join the meeting. \nYou do no need to have read the book to enjoy this book discussion. We will provide a summary. \n  \nWe hope to see you there! \nBook Discussion Organizers\, Karen Sadlier Brown & Joanne Hunter \n

SUMMARY:CALL-Climate Advocacy Meeting - Wednesday\, October 18\, 2023 @ 10:00 a.m. ET
DESCRIPTION:THIS MEETING HAS ALREADY OCCURRED.  Below is useful information about the meeting and how people were coached on participating in focused advocacy work around the Federal Draft CER (Clean Electricity Regulations) legislation in order for it to move forward. \nA video recording of this session is available by clicking here (Use PASSCODE cY26^JS1) \nAt this meeting\, our own Janet Haynes Graham kicked things off by summarizing the key provisions in the CER and highlighting the national campaign against the regulations by Alberta’s Premier.  Janet’s slides are attached here as a PDF. \nThen our guest Ken Love\, shared how he participates in the public consultation process\, specifically on submitting to the online consultation tool for the Draft CER (Clean Electricity Regulations).  Ken’s slides are attached here as a PDF. \n  \n“Action of the Day” – Draft Clean Electricity Regulations \nAt CALL\, we always include an Action of the Day at our monthly meetings – it’s a small action that’s connected to the meeting’s topic. Even though our monthly learning meeting of October 4th was not able to go on as planned (due to speaker illness)\, we did ask everyone to take up our planned “Action of the Day” to endorse and promote the Federal\, Draft Clean Electricity Regulations (CER). There was urgency there because the public consultation process ended on November 2nd. \nOther information we provided: \n\nThese regulations are critically important to achieving net-zero targets – there’s not much value to electrifying our cars and our heating if the electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. You can learn about the CER from this blog post at the Canadian Climate Institute.\nCER detractors have mounted a blatant disinformation campaign aimed at the Canadian public\, urging them to complain to their MPs. It’s been funded by the Alberta government\, which they don’t reveal until the bottom of the long-scrolling webpage. We need to combat this negative campaign to prevent any delay in the CER implementation.\nACTION: Please Email your MP and your MPP (or the equivalent in your province) to tell them that you are among the many citizens who support the CER\, that you understand how critical these regulations are for reducing Canada’s CO2 emissions\, and that the CER needs to be implemented now.\nYou can find email addresses for federal MPs here and for Ontario MPPs here. (A Google search should work for those in other provinces.)\n\n  \n– Karen Sadlier Brown & Michael Barkley\, Co-Leads/Facilitators \nClimate Advocacy Interest Group\, CALL \ne-Mail: advocacy.action@climatelearners.ca

SUMMARY:Powering Ontario's Future: Is Ontario's energy plan designed for the 21st century?
DESCRIPTION:UNFORTUNATELY\, THIS MONTHLY MEETING HAD TO BE POSTPONED DUE TO SPEAKER ILLNESS. WE WILL BE ADDRESSING THIS SUBJECT ON AN ONGOING BASIS. \nMark this date for CALL’s October learning meeting/webinar when we will do a “deep dive” on the subject of creating a clean power grid for Ontario.
