We will learn about TransformTO which is Toronto’s climate action strategy to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040. \nThe group will have an opportunity to discuss the policies and programs currently in place for individuals and for multi-residential buildings to support energy conservation. \n \nDuncan MacLellan is the Project Manager of Environment and Energy Initiatives for the City of Toronto. He previously worked in the conservation department at Toronto Hydro and with other major utilities\, including Horizon Utilities Corp\, Energy Shop and PowerStream. \n

WE WILL BE ADDRESSING THIS SUBJECT ON AN ONGOING BASIS. \nMark this date for CALL’s October learning meeting/webinar when we will do a “deep dive” on the subject of creating a clean power grid for Ontario. We will examine the assumptions and conclusions of the recent IESO Pathways to Decarbonization study\, a critique of the PC’s Powering Ontario’s Future plan\, and take a look at the just-released draft of Clean Energy Regulations. This session is especially for our members and guests and will be led by meeting producer Liz Addison along with  a group of dedicated volunteers from CALL’s Climate Advocacy Interest Group.

From grape-growing to winemaking\, it has spawned an encouraging and sometime bewildering array of farming practices – forcing producers to adopt more sustainable methods of production… RAW\, natural\, organic\, biodynamic\, regenerative\, low-intervention\, permaculture\, polyculture and more. \nDebbie Gordon (CALL supporter and certified Sommelier and Canadian wine scholar) interviewed Steve Matthiasson of Matthiasson Wines in Napa Valley. Steve and his wife Jill are committed environmentalists and certified organic farmers who evaluate every agricultural decision through the lens of sustainability.  Debbie also interviewed Andrea Kaiser (Chair of Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario) to get an update on Ontario’s Wine Sustainability Certification and how the province’s winegrowers are adopting resilience strategies.

Our guest speakers were Dr. Justina Ray (President and Senior Scientist at Wildlife Conservation Society Canada) and Mitchell Beer (publisher and managing editor of The Energy Mix / Climate News Network). \nFOR RESOURCES PAGE [CREATE NEW] \nDear Karen\, \nLast Wednesday\, at our CALL monthly learning meeting titled\, Biodiversity for Life and Climate\, we learned that Biodiversity encompasses the variety of living species on Earth\, including plants\, animals\, bacteria\, and fungi. While Earth’s biodiversity is so rich that many species have yet to be discovered\, many species are being threatened with extinction due to human activities\, putting the Earth’s magnificent biodiversity at risk and therefore human life as well. \nWe were pleased to introduce Dr. Justina Ray\, President and Senior Scientist of Wildlife Conservation Society Canada; and Mitchell Beer\, the founding publisher of Energy Mix\, an e-digest on climate news. \nOur speakers provided an overview of biodiversity in Canada\, some understanding of biodiversity and climate change\, the twin crises that humanity is facing as well as a brief summary of the climate conference COP 27 and the Nature COP 15 held in Dec in Montreal. \nFor those who attended we hope you enjoyed the presentation. Her experience growing up with resource inequity in India fuels her desire to educate\, research\, and find creative solutions to global challenges like freshwater shortage and climate change impacts. She is the founder of Water Speaks\, an initiative that strives to translate the voice of water through research\, education\, and action. As the Founding Director of Trans Africa Pipeline (TAP)\, she is working on solutions to provide clean\, safe water to the residents of the Sahel region of Africa.
