Sustainability, Pathways to Decarbonization and the Future of Ontario’s Energy Systems

September 18, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. CLICK HERE TO VIEW HIS PRESENTATION AND ACCESS OTHER RESOURCES from this very informative session.

Our first learning meeting of the Fall on Wednesday, September 18 at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom, was with Professor Mark Winfield, one of Ontario’s most thoughtful and incisive observers of the energy transition.

As the world moves away from fossil fuels, Ontario faces major challenges in “electrifying everything” from transportation and buildings to industrial activities.  How the province manages the challenges will have major implications for the climate, economic development, and our financial and social well-being in the years ahead.

Through his presentation and an extended Q&A, Professor Winfield helped us to reflect on:

  • The state of the province’s existing energy system;
  • Where the Ford government’s current policy directions are taking us; and
  • The changes in planning and policy needed to put Ontario on the pathway to a sustainable net-zero future.

Mark Winfield is a Professor in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change at York University.

Here is his Faculty Profile.
